a 95,000 word adult science fiction novel blending Rollerball and Ready Player One in an alternate future where a live action MOBA game dominates sports. |
(A work in progress)
READY PLAYER ONE meets ROLLERBALL when a once thankless gamer, now the greatest player in a live action battle arena game, wants a return to his old life but struggles with the allure and fame his gaming persona brings, knowing any decision may end his dreams. To become a true hero, Jason Dávalos learns one must be the dealer and the addict. The professional sports once attracting millions have all but disappeared. Now the most watched sporting event on Earth is Glory of Heroes. Far from its humble beginnings as an online game, Heroes morphed into reality: from a game where humans control avatars to humans becoming the avatar in the arena, the 5,000 square meters of Glory. Across the globe, Jason and thousands of others play the game endlessly online, pack renovated stadiums or view live streams to cheer on their favorite team with no memory of the sports of the past save what history they choose to read. Those in control make billions. A nobody with a thankless job, gamer Jason strives for his place in Heroes, just as addicted to it as countless others. Becoming one of its stars brings wealth and admiration. On the verge of becoming its greatest player, he realizes people only see him as his costumed alter ego Jägerdon, and he is still a nobody without it. Questioning the price of a normal life, and that he keeps people addicted to the game and revenue it makes, he can escape or help others in Heroes do the same. Either choice means returning to a thankless job, all the while never truly shaking off the allure of Heroes.
